The future infrastructure, which will include a sorting center, will be installed in an area of 100 hectares, in which the weighing, administrative, machinery, fire service, hospital waste incubator and leachate lagoon areas have already been built, writes Angop.

Located in Catenguenha, the space of the future center was visited, this Monday, by the head of the Environment department.

"The Minister of the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho Pereira, carried out a work day this Monday morning with the aim of assessing the current state of the sanitary landfill, a space that is being prepared to be the future waste recovery centre in the town of Catenguenha, an infrastructure that will consist of a sorting centre, separating waste with characteristics of reuse and economic reuse", informs the provincial government of Huambo, in a statement to which VerAngola had access.

After the day, the minister announced that the works will be resumed. "Ana Paula de Carvalho Pereira highlighted that the works that are paralyzed were registered in the 2025 State Budget, with authorization and supervision of the contract, as well as the financial guarantee for their restart next April", says the note.

Furthermore, the minister, quoted by Angop, also reported that another waste recovery centre was re-registered in the State Budget for this year to serve, in a single location, the provinces of Luanda, Bengo and Icolo e Bengo, and that, at this moment, the Ministry she heads already has financial approval to execute these projects.

Among other aspects, the minister mentioned the fact that people need to have separate garbage deposits in their homes, given that, soon, all waste will be weighed and sold at a value that will be defined by the authorities, within the framework of the circular economy system, adding that in the process of reusing waste, much of it will be recycled to produce organic fertilizers, given that Angola has a predominantly rural population with demands for fertilizers.

In turn, the governor of Huambo, Pereira Alfredo, pointed out that one of the concerns is related to "the preservation of infrastructure and the poor condition of access roads to the town of Catenguenha, which is underway and is the responsibility of the supervising ministry, and he called on the communities to share responsibility for preserving the collective heritage among all social actors".

According to the governor, quoted in the provincial government's statement, "the joint work between the local government and the Ministry of the Environment has agreed on some details relating to the landfill and the recovery of the cold greenhouse, also included in the 2025 State Budget, and work is currently underway to mobilize financial resources".

He also highlighted that the visit by the Minister of the Environment to the province "served to share challenges of central and local responsibility, having emphasized that the government has already carried out some work to restore the green areas of the city of Huambo, resuming its characteristic as one of the ecological cities of Angola", reads the note.

On this journey, Ana Paula de Carvalho also visited the CETAC facilities and the cold greenhouse.

According to a note from the Ministry of the Environment, to which VerAngola had access, the minister expressed indignation at the state of the cold greenhouse. "Regarding the cold greenhouse, the minister was outraged by its state of conservation, since the infrastructure that already existed was vandalized and said it was necessary to change the scenario and, above all, to be aware that public assets must be preserved," says the note.
