President highlights Angola’s “progress” in fifty years of independence

President João Lourenço argued that Angola has achieved a lot of progress in 50 years of independence, in the areas of schools, water, energy and infrastructure, more than the Portuguese colonial government made in 500 years.

Infrastructures in the areas of housing, drinking water, energy, communication routes and others were highlighted as progress achieved in 50 years of independent Angola, whose celebrations take place on November 11, 2025.

João Lourenço, who spoke on Saturday as president of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), during the launch of his party's Political Agenda 2024, stated that Angolans have always emerged victorious from the challenges they faced.

“We have several challenges ahead, such as economic and social development, so that we can achieve the well-being of Angolans. This is the reason for the MPLA's fight, which is in favor of Angola and Angolans”, he stressed.

He argued that well-being can only be achieved if the country orients its economy well towards development.

“We also need to create a better business environment so that our economy becomes stronger”, he reinforced.

MPLA – Serving the People and Making Angola Grow is the motto of the party's political agenda for 2024.

Internally, João Lourenço defended the need to pay “more attention” to the preparation of party members and cadres, admitting that the MPLA has a lot of work to do, especially its organization at grassroots level.

“If we don't know how many we can count on, this could cost us dearly. It is necessary to pay attention to the organization of the party, especially at the grassroots level,” he noted.

For the MPLA president, the party cannot rely solely on its activists, which is why, he maintained, it must also be at the level of civil society organizations, unions and other social organizations.

“We are very closed in our backyard, we need to work with those outside our party”, he urged, having also asked for more attention to Angolan communities abroad, remembering that they voted, for the first time, in the 2022 general elections.

He also encouraged the Commission for Reconciliation in Memory of the Victims of Political Conflicts (CIVICOP) to continue its work “without authorization from any political party”, noting that this body, abandoned by UNITA in December 2023, must work throughout the national territory .

CIVICOP is the body in charge of the general plan to pay tribute to the victims of the conflicts that occurred in Angola between November 11, 1975 and April 4, 2002.

João Lourenço also praised the performance of the Angolan football team, eliminated on Friday night by Nigeria in the dispute for the quarter-finals at the African Cup of Nations (CAN2023), which takes place in Côte d'Ivoire, considering that the Angolan players had a good performance and kept the hope alive of being able to win the next edition.
