Adalberto da Costa Júnior removes “ghost” from the President’s third term

The president of UNITA removed in Cabinda, the province where he won an electoral victory in 2022, the “ghost” of a possible third term for President João Lourenço.

Adalberto da Costa Júnior was speaking after leaving a meeting with the bishop of Cabinda, Belmiro Chissengueti – the first of a four-day journey through the northernmost province of Angola, in which he will meet with various entities and hold the first rally of the year.

Expressing “great satisfaction” at returning to the region for the first time since the elections, the UNITA leader, who chose to travel by catamaran, from the city of Soyo, instead of the usual plane, explained to journalists that he wanted to “enter through the normal steps, of common people.”

“I came to see how people travel, I came among the populations, it was a beautiful experience, one to repeat”, he highlighted.

Regarding the objectives of coming to Cabinda, he stated that he wants to share UNITA's vision of the country's challenges, pointing out, among these, the need for stability, the democratic rule of law, the fight against poverty and the reduction of rights.

“There is a very clear reduction in freedoms with a Government that is starting to pass laws that are of great concern to the country”, highlighted the politician, stressing that UNITA has “a great responsibility”.

“With Cabinda's vote, UNITA managed to break the traditional two-thirds [MPLA's parliamentary majority]”, he said, considering that it is a strategic element to counter “the ghost” of the third term of the President, João Lourenço, who the Constitution prevents it.

“It is impossible to have a third term without UNITA, we will not go that way”, reinforced the leader of the 'black rooster' party.

The president of UNITA, accompanied by a delegation with several deputies and party leaders, was also received by the vice-governor of Cabinda, Miguel Oliveira, to whom he pointed out the importance of local power in Angola, which he considered complementary to central power.

In a relaxed meeting, the vice-governor welcomed the UNITA delegation, to whom he wished success in their work mission.

The person in charge ended the meeting by evoking the Angola-Nigeria match, for the African Championship of Nations (CAN), which will be played in the next hour: "I did macumba all night to guarantee that Angola will win", he joked.
