Angolan company accuses Portuguese city council of “racism”

An Angolan company accused the Câmara da Póvoa de Varzim, in the district of Porto, of “racism and institutional xenophobia” in a dispute over the construction of a real estate project, on the land of the Clube Desportivo da Póvoa (CDP).

:

At issue is a claim for compensation of 13.2 million euros, claimed in court by the company PEC - Projetos, Consultoria e Investimento, based in Angola, on the grounds that the municipality of Poveira has allegedly not allowed the construction of a residential project in the the club's land, along the coast, for which it had a promissory contract with CDP.

"PEC sought to present its willingness to invest in the city and dialogue directly with the mayor, since January 2018, having been expressly rejected by him, in an insulting way, putting our presentation letter in the media, in a joking and unjustifiably insulting", reads a company statement.

In the document, signed by António Castro Vide, from the management of PEC, the official said that "never in 40 years of academic and business activity on several continents" has he felt "such gratuitous confrontation that reveals contours of racism and institutional xenophobia".

"PEC was forced to go to court, against its will, in July 2021, since the rights arising from the promissory contract signed with CDP expired at that time. The company did everything to reach a dialogue with the municipality, without success, in the face of a behavior totally averse to dialogue, based on the abuse of the mayor's authoritarianism", can be read in the same text.

Even so, the company continues to express "willingness to dialogue with the municipality" showing hope "in a consensual solution".

Confronted by Lusa about the content of the PEC company's statement, the mayor of Póvoa de Varzim, Aires Pereira, declined to comment, only remembering that this Thursday, the Clube Desportivo da Póvoa will vote to elect new bodies. social.

Due to this imbroglio, the club saw the municipality suspend the usual annual support in the context of training sport.

It is recalled that the CDP land, where the PEC company would have agreed to build the venture, are located in Zone E52 of the city's Detailed Plan, which was suspended in 2018, making construction on the site impossible.

The area will continue to house the sports facilities of the CDP and also of Varzim Sport Clube, also including the conversion of the bullring into a multipurpose pavilion and the construction of an alley.
