The information was revealed at the end of the first ordinary session of the Provincial Government of Luanda (GPL), which took place last Friday.
Although there will be no parade, there will be some activities to mark the festivity. In a note made available on its Facebook, the GPL says that for Carnival Day, which this year marks the 1st of March, it is planned to hold "a show demonstrating the parade of the 13 class A groups that participated in the 2020 edition, with the integration of the União Operário Kabocomeu group, taking place at the Camama Production Center, broadcast by the Public Television of Angola".
Furthermore, the calendar of initiatives also includes the holding of reflection meetings, with the aim of "revitalizing this popular festival" and also honoring "backstage personalities, namely those who work with allegories and sculptures, plastic artists, seamstresses, percussionists and composers".
The note also states that "to celebrate the centenary of the late President António Agostinho Neto, remembering his appeal in Cazenga in 1978 about the return to the Carnival of culture, there will be a fair at Parque da Independência, where the artefacts of the of 40 groups from Luanda".
Even without the completion of the parade, the groups continue to work hard, "with many already having their outfits ready", the statement said.
The GPL says that for the second year in a row, Carnival is conditioned by the covid-19 pandemic, "being marked with alternative activities, without jeopardizing the public health of Luandans".
According to Jornal de Angola, on Wednesday, a provincial meeting will be held, with the presence of those responsible for the carnival groups and experts with a view to starting to define the destination and essence of Luanda's Carnival at this time of pandemic.
