National Bank of Angola warns consumers about financial fraud

The central bank has received several complaints from consumers of financial products and services, about alleged investment solutions with promises of large profits, through deposits in accounts domiciled in institutions in the national financial market.

In a note, to which the Lusa agency had access, the National Bank of Angola (BNA) clarifies the public about the nature of the aforementioned operations, which comprise Ponzi, Pyramid, Multilevel Marketing or similar schemes, as well as informing the public about the mechanisms to prevent adherence to the aforementioned operations.

The document explains that a Ponzi scheme is a sophisticated fraudulent investment operation of the pyramid scheme type, which involves promising to pay abnormally high returns to investors at the expense of money paid by later-arriving investors, rather than the income generated by any real deal.

The Pyramid, on the other hand, is an unsustainable business model, characterized as fraud and often masked under a 'multilevel marketing' system.

"The scheme involves exchanging money for the recruitment of other people or, for example, for daily posting of the company's advertisements on the internet and/or social networks, without any product or service delivered", reads the ad.

The BNA, taking into account the illegality of these financial operations, urges consumers of financial products and services to refrain from initiating operations with entities that offer alleged investment solutions with promises of large profits, involving bank deposit accounts domiciled in financial institutions in the national market.

The central bank also appeals to consumers, whenever they suspect that they are facing offers that constitute fraudulent financial practices, to promptly report it to the competent judicial bodies for the due process of criminal liability.

The BNA appeals to commercial banks to refrain from executing customer transactions whenever there is a suspicion that they are Ponzi, Pyramid and Multilevel Marketing schemes or others, informing the customer, in writing, of the suspicious factors that lead to the non-execution of the operation and also communicate it to the justice organs.
