The construction of the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Malanje began in 1862, but 30 years later it was practically abandoned and destroyed.
However, it began to be rebuilt in 1920. The construction work was finished in 1929, the year it was inaugurated.
At the time of the colonies, in 1957, the church was elevated to the Cathedral of the diocese of Malanje.
In May 2017, the Church of Our Lady of Assumption of Malanje was elevated to historical and cultural heritage of the country, having been recognized as one of the most beautiful representations of the religious-historical architecture of the time when it was built.
