Angola to support Mozambique with oxygen tank

Angola is going to support Mozambique in the fight against covid-19, with the sending of an oxygen tank to hospitalized patients in need of respiratory support, announced the Presidency of the Mozambican Republic.

:

"An oxygen tank leaves tomorrow [Monday] on a military freighter, bound for Mozambique", reads a statement.

The information was provided by João Lourenço in a telephone conversation held this Sunday with Filipe Nyusi, head of state of Mozambique, within the scope of regular contacts between the two.

During the conversation, both "exchanged information about the evolution of covid-19 in both countries, as well as in the region, and its impact on their respective economies".

The government also exchanged information on the security situation and Nyusi updated João Lourenço on "the actions to combat terrorism in the province of Cabo Delgado".

The two presidents pledged "to maintain regular consultations and to strengthen cooperation".

Mozambique recorded more cases, deaths and hospitalizations in January than in the whole of 2020.

It currently has an accumulated total of 535 deaths and 50,265 cases, of which 63 percent recovered, and 294 hospitalized.

In Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country, armed violence has lasted for three years, in what is the province where the largest private multinational investment in Africa is developed, for the exploitation of natural gas.

The situation is causing a humanitarian crisis with more than 2000 deaths and 560,000 displaced people, without housing or food, mainly concentrated in the provincial capital, Pemba.

Some of the raids have been claimed by the Islamic State 'jihadist' group since 2019.
