João Lourenço attends African Union summit

At least 38 heads of state and government were present at the 33rd African Union (AU) summit, which began on Sunday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the confirmed presence of João Lourenço and his Cape Verdean counterpart.

According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 38 African presidents, vice-presidents and prime ministers confirmed their presence at the meeting, which began on Sunday and ends this Monday, closing the organization's annual meetings.

According to the same source, 31 presidents, three vice-presidents and four prime ministers participated in the summit, as well as seven ministers.

Among the Portuguese-speaking countries that make up the organization were confirmed the presence of the presidents of Angola, João Lourenço, and Cape Verde, Jorge Carlos Fonseca.

Representing São Tomé and Príncipe, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elsa Pinto, was present.

The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, the Director General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom, the Prime Ministers of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and Norway, Erna Solberg, and the President of Palestine, Mahmud Abbas, were also among the guests at the summit.

Around 9,000 participants accredited themselves online for the event, parallel meetings and meetings of the various departments of the AU.

This year, African leaders met under the theme "Silencing arms: Creating favourable conditions for development in Africa", with discussions focusing on implementing the organisation's peace and security agenda for the continent.

Progress in the implementation of the development agenda (Agenda 2063), the operationalization of the Free Trade Area in Africa, as well as the contributions of member states to the organization's budget and the continent's digital transformation strategy, among other issues, were also assessed.

The African Union comprises 55 countries, including Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe, and is headed by a committee and its presidency is rotated by the countries for a period of one year.

The organisation meets annually in an ordinary assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where it has its headquarters.
