Angola may be the 13th country to join Compact with Africa, says Merkel

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Angola could be the 13th country to join Compact with Africa and welcomed the intensification of bilateral relations with the African country, with whom she intends "a special partnership".

"We already have 12 states that are members, I think Angola will be the 13th country to join Compact with Africa," Angela Merkel told reporters, after meeting Angolan President João Lourenço in Luanda.

Compact with Africa, started during the German presidency of the G20 and supported by finance ministers and governors of the G-20 banks in Baden-Baden in March 2017, is an initiative that aims to promote private investment in Africa, including in infrastructures.

Angela Merkel also spoke about the binational commission created last year, in the context of João Lourenço's visit to Germany, welcoming that it translates into concrete projects, just one year after it was created, which shows "how intense they are. bilateral relations "between the two countries.

Angela Merkel and João Lourenço met at the Palácio da Cidade Alta, in Luanda, and were also at the opening of the 8th Angola-Germany Economic Forum.

The turnover between Germany and Angola reached 20 million dollars in 2019 and the two heads of state expressed interest in deepening cooperation in the economic area and beyond.

After the meeting between the German Chancellor and the President, two agreements were signed, one relating to the air transport service and the other, between the Ministry of Natural Resources and Petroleum (Mirempet) and the German exchange service for the training of qualified staff.

This is Chancellor Angela Merkel's second visit to Angola, the first of which took place in 2011, when an extended partnership agreement was established between the two countries.

João Lourenço visited Germany in August 2018 and met Chancellor Merkel in New York in September.
