João Lourenço meets with Adalberto da Costa Júnior

The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, meets this Wednesday with the president of UNITA, Adalberto da Costa Júnior, for the first time since he became the third president of the largest opposition party.

:

Last week, the head of state inaugurated Adalberto da Costa Júnior as a member of the Council of the Republic, having at the time highlighted that this consultative body would be “more enriched” with the new councilor.

The Council of the Republic is an advisory body to the President of the Republic and it comprises the Vice President of the Republic, the President of the National Assembly, the President of the Constitutional Court, the Attorney General of the Republic, leaders of political parties with parliamentary seats and invited entities.

Adalberto Costa Júnior was elected third president of UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola) in November 2019, succeeding Isaías Samakuva, who completed 16 years in office, and founder Jonas Savimbi, who was killed by the Angolan Armed Forces in 2002.

UNITA is the second largest force with parliamentary representation, with 51 deputies. The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) has 150 parliamentarians.
