Ambassador advises against repatriation of Angolans: “It is safer to stay at home”

Gong Tao, Chinese ambassador to Angola, advised against the repatriation of Angolan citizens in the territory, especially those at the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic in Wuhan.

The diplomat considered the concern registered by family members of Angolans living in China - mostly students - to be normal, but he appealed for calm, saying that cases of infected people continue to decrease day by day.

Cited by Jornal de Angola, Gong Tao stated that there is an orientation from the World Health Organization (WHO) so that people are not moved. “We respect the desire for evacuation but, for us, the situation is already stabilizing. It is safer to stay at home. This is WHO's advice. Nobody leaves and nobody enters to avoid contamination”, he said.

The ambassador also guaranteed that all the conditions exist so that there is no lack of essential goods for citizens who are quarantined, making it clear that there is no distinction in the treatment between nationals and foreigners. “Basic social services are guaranteed. There is food, drink and personal hygiene supplies”, said Gong Tao.

During the press conference, videos were released of two Angolan students in China, assuring them that they were well and that they were supported by the authorities.

Finally, the ambassador added that scientific investigations are continuing to find a vaccine.
