According to a note from the Presidency of the Republic, to which VerAngola had access, Tshisekedi's trip to Angola served to make "a joint analysis of the subsequent steps to be taken within the framework of the Luanda Process, taking into account the situation created with the taking of Goma by rebel forces".
The Presidency also says that the hearing took place "as part of the mediation efforts undertaken by President João Lourenço, with a view to reestablishing peace and security in the East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo".
In recent days, the situation in the DRC has worsened after Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, was occupied by the M23 movement and Rwandan troops, who seized the airport last Tuesday. Additionally, in Kinshasa, protesters also attacked several embassies, including Rwanda, Kenya, France, Belgium and the United States of America.
In light of these developments in the neighboring country, João Lourenço, through a statement released this Wednesday, expressed "great apprehension", having deplored the "occupation of the city of Goma" and called for the "immediate withdrawal of the M23 from the illegally occupied territories".
The President of the Republic also called for the "immediate withdrawal of the Rwandan Defence Forces from Congolese territory so that conditions can be urgently created to stabilise the lives of the population, including the normalisation of the operation of the airport in the city of Goma under safe conditions, with a view to facilitating the safe return of members of the Enhanced Expanded Verification Mechanism (ERVM) and the ICGLR Expanded Verification Mechanism, and for the entry of humanitarian aid for displaced and refugee populations".
Among other aspects, in the statement, the Head of State also urged the "DRC and Rwanda to respect the commitments made under the Luanda Process, allowing the necessary conditions to be created for the convening of a Tripartite Summit in Luanda, with a urgent, on a date to be communicated in due course."
