Country preparing to assume presidency of the ICGLR parliamentary forum

The country will chair the Plenary Assembly of the Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (PF-ICGLR) on a rotating basis, in the period 2025-2026, during the 15th ordinary session of the entity, which will take place in the last week of April in Luanda.

In this sense, preparations for holding the aforementioned event are already underway. According to a statement from parliament, to which VerAngola had access, the event's organizing committee met on Monday and approved the regulations, activity plan and budget.

"In order to prepare the 15th ordinary session of the Plenary Assembly of the Parliamentary Forum of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (FP-GIRGL), to be held in Angola from 25 to 30 April this year, the organizing committee of the event, headed by the president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, approved, on January 27, its regulations, activity plan and respective budget", says the note.

On the occasion, the Secretary General of the National Assembly, Pedro Agostinho de Neri, as Coordinator of the Subcommittee on Finance, Logistics and Transport, assured that the "budgetary conditions for holding the event" were in place, where the 12 member states of the ICGLR Parliamentary Forum will participate.

In turn, deputy Pedro Sebastião, deputy coordinator of the organizing committee, considered that the session will be held at a particularly "difficult" time, alluding to the conflicts unfolding on the continent.

"We still have two major conflicts in our region, in Sudan and in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in addition to the low-intensity conflict that we are seeing in the Central African Republic," he highlighted.

Regarding the preparations for the event, the deputy also announced that the work plan had been given the 'green light' and working groups were formed to ensure the event took place smoothly.

According to Pedro Sebastião, according to the forum's rotation order, the leader of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, is expected to take over as president of the organization for the period 2025-2026, since it is the only member parliament that has not yet held this position.

"The FP-ICGLR is an interparliamentary organization that brings together national parliaments of the 12 member states of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, namely Angola, Burundi, Congo, Central African Republic (CAR), Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia," the statement added.

Angola joined this entity in 2014, after having received an official invitation to become a member of this forum the previous year.

It is worth noting that the FR-ICGL is currently chaired by Nelly Mutti, Speaker of the Zambian Parliament.
