President of the Republic met with his Ghanaian counterpart to discuss bilateral relations

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama was in Luanda last Saturday for a brief working visit. The highlight of this trip was the meeting held with the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, which served as an opportunity for the two heads of state to address issues related to the strengthening and expansion of bilateral relations between the two countries.

According to a statement from CIPRA, to which VerAngola had access, the Ghanaian president landed in the country during Saturday afternoon.

"The President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, arrived in Luanda in the middle of the afternoon this Saturday for a brief working visit," the note reads.

After arriving at 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, John Dramani Mahama proceeded to the Presidential Palace, where he met with João Lourenço.

"Bilateral relations and the need for their strengthening and expansion dominated the conversation between the two Presidents," says CIPRA.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to which VerAngola had access, when he arrived at the airport, the president of Ghana was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, among other individuals.

According to the ministry, political and diplomatic relations between the two countries are characterized by "mutual cooperation, historical ties and common interests, particularly in the context of the African Union (AU) and other multilateral organizations".

"Both countries share the vision of promoting peace, sustainable development and regional integration on the African continent," reads the statement, which also adds that Angola and Ghana have "historical roots linked to the struggle for African independence and the strengthening of of the Pan-Africanist movement".

As far as economic and trade cooperation is concerned, both countries "have been exploring opportunities to strengthen economic ties, especially in the energy, mining and agriculture sectors."

According to the ministry, "companies from both countries have shown interest in investing in strategic sectors such as oil and gas, given the relevance of these sectors in their economies."

In relation to the international scenario, the two countries "collaborate in forums such as the United Nations, the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), focusing on issues related to security, stability and development".

"Both advocate the strengthening of African institutions to face common challenges such as terrorism, regional conflicts and climate change," the statement said, adding that "relations between the two countries continue to deepen, with diplomatic visits and bilateral agreements aimed at promote peace, economic development and the well-being of their populations."

The Ghanaian President's working visit was only for a few hours, with John Dramani Manama leaving Angola during the day on Saturday.
