The MPLA parliamentary group reaffirmed this Wednesday its commitment to the institutionalization of local authorities, which continues to be “an imperative” of this party’s political agenda.

The position was expressed this Wednesday by the leader of the parliamentary group of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), Joaquim Reis Júnior, when he presented a political declaration in parliament.

"The MPLA, through its parliamentary group, in this hemicycle of the mother house of democracy, has reiterated, on several occasions, its total availability to work together with all political forces in the search for the best solutions for the implementation of local government", said Joaquim Reis Junior.

The National Assembly is responsible for approving the municipal legislative package, which is essential, according to the Head of State, João Lourenço, to call for the first municipal elections in Angola.

"It is on the basis of the law that the President of the Republic can call municipal elections," said João Lourenço in 2023, in an interview with Radio France International (RFI).

In his speech, Joaquim Reis Júnior highlighted that, despite the challenges still existing in the country, the national reconstruction process represents resilience and the party's commitment "to building a prosperous and sustainable future, capable of responding to the aspirations of the Angolan people".

According to Joaquim Reis Júnior, the ruling party has achieved several achievements and conquests, "which it is proud to present on any stage", listing the guarantee of Angola's territorial integrity, the leadership of the process of achieving peace and national reconciliation, between others.

"It would be good if the largest opposition party, UNITA [National Union for the Total Independence of Angola], taking advantage of this stage or any other, also listed its great achievements for Angola, so that the people would be aware of them. This exercise would have some useful, unlike the exercise of calling press conferences, to interfere in the internal affairs of the MPLA", he said.

"The MPLA and its parliamentary group understand that it is important to continue investing in infrastructures that not only connect the country, but also connect the dreams of Angolans to opportunities," he highlighted.
