“Governance has always been based on the acquisition of new debts. Today, the country survives almost weekly and biweekly through continuous debt contracts”, said the leader of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Adalberto Costa Júnior, in the presentation of the party’s vision on the state of the national economy.
Adalberto Costa Júnior stated that the analysis made by the party will be shared with the outside world to alert investors in Angola “who want to be in a stable economy” and also to help “not grant money that goes to consumption and not to create a country”.
According to the president of UNITA, it is possible for Angola to escape the scenario of an economy “tied to a huge baobab tree called the party-state”, through “reforms, courage and political will”.
According to Adalberto Júnior, by sharing "very substantial figures", the party is "doing an exercise within the framework of the 50 years of independence, of sharing and of inviting for a better Angola”.
The leader of UNITA stated that the solutions were presented and "the government has all the conditions to embrace them, because Angola does not only have oil".
"The dependence on oil is risky and we have seen something surprising here throughout all the cycles. The growth in accumulated revenue has always been equivalent to the growth in debt. It is unbelievable!", he highlighted.
The leader of UNITA stressed that "Angola could have a sovereign fund of hundreds of billions of dollars, to leverage all the transformations that the country needs, but also to provide security for current and future generations and all of this disappeared due to the lack of institutions".
"It was in this context of extreme institutional weakness, of lack of separation of powers, of lack of freedom of the press and of expression, of physical and legal insecurity, that Angolans today are asking themselves about the destination given to 544 billion dollars in tax revenues [mainly from oil] between 2002 and 2022”, said the politician.
In his speech, Adalberto Costa Júnior said he had demonstrated that the General State Budget for 2025 is “artificial”, growing by 10 billion kwanzas “so as not to show the dependence on the public service debt, of 72 percent - which is unbelievable – and the enormous hole that exists”.
“We believe that the Government, if it wants to, can do it now. If it does not want to do it, we invite all patriotic forces to join us, because we will do it in 2027”, he stated.
For UNITA, the national economy “is tied to an enormous baobab tree called the party-State, which feeds excessively on it and does not intend to let go for reasons of political survival, unless it is torn away by the social majority [the People] who have been the most harmed”.
“Change becomes urgent in the 2027 elections. This is a challenge that UNITA sets itself as an inalienable duty and the utmost responsibility as the leading opposition party. And, to this end, it invites, once again, the other patriotic forces in the country to share this decisive challenge for the future of Angola”, said the leader of the country’s second political force.
