Leader of PRA-JA Servir Angola defends the transition of the United Patriotic Front to a coalition

The general coordinator of PRA-JA Servir Angola, Abel Chivukuvuku, said this Thursday that the platform of the opposition United Patriotic Front (FPU) must be reformulated, which should involve its transformation into a formal coalition.

Chivukuvuku spoke to journalists at the National Assembly, after an audience with the president of parliament, Carolina Cerqueira, after suspending his mandate as deputy, and pointed to 2026 as the year in which the first congress of his newly legalized party should be held.

Of the 12 deputies of PRA-JA Servir Angola, seven suspended their mandates and five, without management functions in the party structure, remain in the assembly.

Chivukuvuku stressed that this is in compliance with the law, since "a citizen cannot be the leader of another party and be in parliament on behalf of another party".

The PRA-JA Servir Angola deputies were elected on the UNITA list, which ran in the 2022 elections under an opposition platform, the United Patriotic Front (FPU), alongside PRA-JA Servir Angola and the Democratic Bloc, also including a representative of civil society (Francisco Viana).

"If I wanted to stay in the National Assembly, I would have to stop being the general coordinator of the Patriotic Front, of PRA-JA. It is a legal imperative and, in our case, no one was forced, no one was coerced, no one. The logic was, whoever wants to stay in the PRA-JA management bodies, leaves parliament", he said.

Chivukuvuku reinforced that "whoever wants to stay in parliament, stays, but will not go to the PRA-JA management bodies", highlighting that "the logic is simply this".

The general coordinator of PRA-JA Servir Angola, who was a prominent member of UNITA before leaving the party in 2010, highlighted the "cordial" atmosphere in parliament, where "they are all brothers and friends", and stated the objective of maintaining the Front United Patriotic.

"Strengthen, reformulate and, if necessary, expand. And I want to make it clear, reformulating means moving towards a formal exercise (...). The Patriotic Front cannot be just an idea, a vision, it has to be a formal exercise, a formal coalition, that's what reformulation is," he stressed.

Abel Chivukuvuku stressed that the concept of reformulation has to do with the need to give legal status to the United Patriotic Front, which includes several parties.

"In the case of the Democratic Bloc, if we do not find a reformulation that allows the United Patriotic Front a legal status, the Bloc cannot compete with us, with the Patriotic Front, because otherwise it would be automatically extinguished. So, it is imperative, it is necessary to reformulate, find a model that legally allows the United Patriotic Front to be preserved", he justified.

Regarding the holding of the party congress, he said that the year 2025 has "its own agenda for strengthening and growth", intending to hold the conference of the provisional national body, which will convene the congress, in the middle of this year.

"Our forecast is 2026, it is the year to hold the congress, which will elect the definitive and permanent bodies of PRA-JA and also start, in the second half of 2026, the pre-electoral campaign", he said, without saying whether he will be a candidate in the 2027 presidential elections.

"That was a long time ago. I still don't know if I'll be able to win the congress. I have to win first in our congress in 2026," said the politician, emphasizing that it will be a congress with multiple candidates.
