Portuguese-speaking countries with complicated tasks to get through the group stage
The Portuguese-speaking teams will have a complicated task to pass the group stage of CAN 2023, with Cape Verde being, in theory, the strongest candidate for the round of 16.
In Côte d'Ivoire, from Saturday to February 11, Cape Verde appears as the best-placed Portuguese-speaking team in the FIFA world rankings, in 73rd position, followed by Guinea-Bissau (103rd), Mozambique (111.º) and Angola (117th).
The 'blue sharks' have been, in recent years, the strongest among the Portuguese-speaking countries and will participate in the CAN for the fourth time, seeking, for the third time, to pass the group stage.
Integrated in Group B, Cape Verde will fight for qualification (aimed at the top two in each group and the four best third-placed teams) with Egypt, coached by Rui Vitória, record holder of titles and finalist in the last edition, and Ghana.
In the same 'poule', Mozambique will have many difficulties to win a game in a CAN for the first time, in what will be its fifth participation.
Absent from the main African national team competition since 2010, the 'mambas' only managed two draws in the 12 games played in the CAN.
Growing in recent years, Guinea-Bissau will be in the CAN for the fourth consecutive time and can finally secure their first victory in the competition, with only one draw in nine games and without any goals in the last two appearances.
However, the 'djurtus' task will not be easy, as they will face in Group A the hosts Ivory Coast and the always strong Nigeria, coached by José Peseiro, in addition to Equatorial Guinea.
The team with the most history in CAN, Angola, coached by Portuguese Pedro Gonçalves, is far from its best moments and will try to repeat its appearances in the second phase of 2008 and 2010, the year in which it organized the competition.
This will be the ninth presence of the 'Palancas Negras' in CAN, being in a Group D that is less strong than those of the other Portuguese-speaking teams, against Algeria, champion in 2019, Burkina Faso and Mauritania.
