GPL honors heroes of the Baixa do Cassanje massacre

The Government of the Province of Luanda (GPL) paid tribute to the heroes of the Baixa de Cassanje massacre, which took place in 1961, by laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier, in the Santa Ana cemetery.

In a statement, to which VerAngola had access, the GPL informs that this act was a "way of honoring the inexhaustible source of inspiration for the preservation of national patriotic consciousness and the martyrs of the national liberation struggle".

The vice-governor for the Political and Social Sector, Manuel António Gonçalves, presided over the event.

On the occasion, the person responsible, cited by Angop, considered that the action of the aforementioned heroes constitutes one of the most important occurrences in the process of the struggle for the liberation of Angolans, in awakening nationalist consciousness and national unity.

In addition to the vice-governor, at the provincial event, which took place as part of the Day of the Martyrs of Colonial Repression – marked this Thursday –, the vice-governor for Technical Services and Infrastructures, Cristino Mário Ndeitunga, administrators municipalities, provincial directors, former combatants and veterans of the country, traditional authorities, representatives of ex-military associations, civil society, among others.
