The invitation to Zacarias da Costa was addressed to him by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Mauro Vieira, on behalf of the current Brazilian Presidency of the G20.

Brazil is one of the nine member states of the CPLP, and since Lula da Silva assumed the country's presidency, just over a year ago, the organization has assumed another relevance in its foreign policy.

The G20 or Group of 20 is made up of the finance ministers and heads of central banks of the world's 19 largest economies plus the African Union and the European Union.

The group, created in 1999, after the successive financial crises of the 1990s, aims to encourage international negotiation, on a basis of expanded dialogue and taking into account the growing economic weight of some countries, which together represent 90 percent of world GDP, 80 percent of world trade (including intra-EU trade) and two-thirds of the world's population.

This is a group with significant influence on the management of the financial system and the global economy.

The meeting will take place in Rio de Janeiro, and Zacarias da Costa has already confirmed his presence this week.

The G20 studies, analyzes and promotes discussion between the richest and emerging countries on political issues related to the promotion of international financial stability, and addresses issues that are beyond the responsibilities of an organization.

In addition to Brazil, CPLP member states include Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and Timor-Leste.

Brazil, which has held the presidency of the G20 since December 1, 2023, invited Portugal and Angola, among other countries, to observe the organization.

In a statement, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled at the time that, "historically, the G20 presidencies invite countries that are not members of the group and international organizations to participate in meetings on their calendar of events".

In addition to Portugal and Angola, the Brazilian presidency invited Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Nigeria, Norway and Singapore.

"Portugal gladly accepted Brazil's invitation to participate in the G20, resulting in permanent monitoring of the work of the group of the twenty largest economies worldwide", said the executive at the time, in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE).
