US praises João Lourenço’s “essential role” in mediating the conflict between DRCongo and Rwanda

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, praised this Thursday, in Luanda, the “essential role” of the President, João Lourenço, in mediating the conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRCongo) and Rwanda.

In a press conference with his Angolan counterpart, the head of North American diplomacy said that João Lourenço deserves the "trust of other partners" and said that the United States also supports these efforts so that the diplomatic path can move forward.

For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs said that the path to peace "is not a straight line" and that Angola continues to strive for a peaceful solution to the conflict.

"The path to peace is not a straight line, it may vary, but efforts continue and we have benefited from the actions of the United States", Téte António told journalists, at the end of the meeting with Blinken, who is holding a visits Angola, at the end of a tour of four African countries.

A sign that Luanda continues to commit to the process was the telephone conversation that the President held on Wednesday with his Congolese and Rwandan counterparts, said the minister, reinforcing that DRCongo is a "strategic country", not only for Angola, but also for Africa and the world.

"Angola's efforts to achieve peace on the African continent are also for the benefit of the international community", he stressed.

At the press conference, the head of North American diplomacy also stated that the US supports reforms in the United Nations security council "so that they reflect current realities" and not just those that existed when this institution was created, meeting the needs aspirations of Angola and other countries that demand more representation.

Téte António, asked about Angola's current relationship with Russia and his assessment of this country as a partner since the start of the war in Ukraine, highlighted the premises of diplomacy, based on mutual respect, respect for sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs.

"Angola is a country open to the world (...) all partnerships that can adapt to our needs and development policies are welcome", highlighted the head of Foreign Affairs, devaluing differences of point of view.
