CPLP Parliamentary Assembly meets in Luanda with Guinea-Bissau on the agenda

The situation in Guinea-Bissau is one of the topics on the agenda at the two-day meeting of the 1st Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), which begins this Monday in Luanda.

:

Speaking to Lusa, the president of the Policy, Strategy, Legislation, Citizenship and Circulation Committee of the CPLP Parliamentary Assembly, considers that there is a situation in Guinea-Bissau that "deserves concern".

"The rule of law and democracy, respect for the Constitution are cornerstones for our countries to move forward", he told the Lusa Porfírio Silva agency.

"In the case of Guinea-Bissau, we have a situation that worries us all greatly, since we are aware that the National Popular Assembly of Guinea-Bissau is once again being prevented from exercising its mandate in a situation that we It seems clearly unconstitutional to us", he argued.

For Porfírio Silva, "based on the elements that are available, both from a legal point of view, in terms of knowledge of the Constitution of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, and from a factual point of view, there are elements that concern us".

The current composition of the Guinean National Popular Assembly results from the elections held in June 2023 and the President of Guinea-Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, dissolved the parliament on December 4th, despite the Constitution not allowing it within 12 months after the election.

At the Luanda meeting, which will take place behind closed doors, issues of internal organization will also be debated, and the participating parliamentarians will also discuss recently held electoral processes, as is the case in Mozambique, or those yet to be held, particularly in Portugal.

"When there are changes, modifications or political difficulties or political successes in the different Member States, this analysis is also carried out", he added, concluding that the 1st Committee of the CPLP Parliamentary Assembly "always pays close attention to electoral processes".
