Fighting inflation is one of the sector's priorities for this year, says Vera Daves

The Minister of Finance, Vera Daves, highlighted the fight against inflation as one of the priorities of the sector she oversees for this year. The consideration was made by the minister when she spoke at the opening of the ministry's XIII Consultative Council, which took place in Moçâmedes, in the province of Namibe, under the motto “Excellence Rhymes with Integrity”.

"I would also like to say a word about the challenges that this year 2024 holds for us. These challenges arise, mainly, from the international context, of which we are alien, geopolitical challenges, combating inflation and everything that comes as a result of this", she stated, adding that this "put the fight against inflation on the agenda of the monetary authorities, and the National Bank of Angola is no exception".

In her intervention, the minister said that the council "aims to analyze with objectivity, distance and technicality its main themes" on which they are working.

Quoted in a statement from the authority, to which VerAngola had access, the minister called on professionals in the sector to be available to share information with the public: "I appeal to everyone not to leave the void unfilled and to be proactive and available to share this information".

"We must continue to focus on our people, so that the results of their work produce effects in the lives of communities. Ethics and rigor must guide us in all moments of our action, inside and outside the ministry", said Vera Daves, adding: "This is also why integrity is a keyword of this council and we must ensure that our work is integral, processes are auditable and our services are better and detect acts that may be held accountable."

At the time, the minister also considered that they must have "systems and processes in place".

"We don't have to wait for someone to tell us that something isn't going well in our home. We have to have systems and processes that are working, monitorable and thus responsible for errors", he pointed out, recalling: "Our mission is to serve".

In her speech, the government official also said that last year they did not go to the international financial market, and that they will continue to "be vigilant and judicious in the State's options".

"There is always a debate around debt, but debt in itself is not bad. We have to ensure that it is manageable with affordable rates. This is the work that we have assured and is more ambitious in the conditions to be obtained. This will help us in definition of choices", she added.

Archer Mangueira, provincial governor of Namibe, who also spoke at the opening of the consultative council, said they were aware "of the need for better, more effective and fairer revenue collection".

"We are well aware of the need for better, more effective and fairer revenue collection. Everyone who visits us today has found evidence of the effort to convert expenditure into gains for the population and the improvement of their quality of life. This transformation could be more effective if we can contribute in the area of revenue", he said, quoted in the statement.

"The Provincial Government also defined as a priority the boosting of economic activity, especially fishing, industry and tourism, sectors for which the Credit Guarantee Fund constitutes an important pillar in achieving this goal", added Archer Mangueira.

The Advisory Council took place last weekend, on the 27th and 28th of January, and addressed various topics such as ethics and compliance in Public Administration, communication and good governance, as well as the challenges of the Treasury's Financial Programming, among others.
