Teachers start strike to demand salary update

The National Union of Teachers and Workers in Non-University Education (Sinptenu) started the second phase of the strike this Thursday, which runs until January 26, to demand salary updates, a union source announced.

:

According to the secretary-general of Sinptenu, Victor Gimbi, stating that the strike arises because of "the lack of good will" on the part of the Ministry of Education in resolving its claims, expressed in a claim book sent in February 2021.

"The strike is a fact, because we are demanding the updating of the salary scale. It is not justified that a teacher, whatever his academic level, which results in the category in which he finds himself, is earning 69 thousand kwanzas and the maximum of the table are 300 thousand kwanzas", said this Thursday the trade unionist, in statements to Lusa.

For education agents, Sinptenu proposes a salary between 400,000 kwanzas and 1,000,000 kwanzas between the 13th and 1st grade, for technical staff salaries between 200,000 kwanzas and 300,000 kwanzas and for non-technical staff, namely second-class skilled workers, salaries of 120,000 kwanzas and for cleaning assistants salaries of 100,000 kwanzas.

The strike was declared last April, the second phase was suspended in May, but resumed this Thursday "in all public and public-private establishments" and extends until next Wednesday, 26 January.

For Victor Gimbi, the current remuneration constitutes "a humiliation for the teachers", therefore, he pointed out, the negotiation of the salary scale "is the focal point" of the claim book.

"Although there are other points such as the availability of working, hygiene and safety conditions, especially in a pandemic period, because 80 percent of schools do not have water for hand washing", he pointed out.

Teachers "acquire alcohol gel for disinfestation by their own means and there are no conditions for safety and protection against covid-19 at this time in school establishments and we also claim that", he stressed.

The secretary general of Sinptenu also pointed out that the strike, which takes place this Thursday the first day, "is interpolated" to show that the class is decided. The other phase will take place in April and in this period of time the union hopes to negotiate the salary scale.
