Death of motorcycle taxi drivers generates protests and clashes in Namibe province

The death of two motorcycle taxi drivers, following a road accident, in Namibe province, this Thursday generated protests and clashes by their colleagues with "throwing stones at police officers" who rushed to the scene.

The information was transmitted this Thursday by the Namibe Provincial Command of the police, noting that the accident occurred on Thursday morning, on Joaquim Morais street, involving a heavy goods truck and two motorcycles.

In a press release, the police said that the accident resulted in the death of two motorcycle taxi drivers at the scene and serious injuries to two other motorcycle taxi drivers and their colleagues "tried to take justice into their own hands by throwing stones and blunt objects" at the truck.

The police rushed to the scene to "try to appease the spirits" of the victims' colleagues, but these, according to the corporation, left for "riots rioting in front of the Criminal Investigation Service facilities and in some police units" in the city of Moçâmedes.

According to the police, the motorcycle taxi drivers "threw stones at their personnel and passersby" and this action resulted in the injury of two agents, so the police force, in a minority compared to the large number of protesters, "dispersed them with rubber bullets and smoke grenades".

Videos of this incident and of the confrontation between motorcycle taxi drivers, who, in the middle of a public road, threw stones and other objects, and in response police officers fired, went viral on social media.

The local police guarantee that the situation "is already under control" and appeals to the population of Namibe to "remain calm, denouncing all acts likely to alter public order and tranquility".
