The country will have around 12 million voters voting in this year's general elections

About 12 million citizens are expected to vote in the general elections, scheduled for this year. The Minister of Territory Administration, Marcy Lopes, said that the unofficial electoral registration process is proceeding “smoothly”, having clarified that the citizen's card is not “usable for voting”.

:

"The registration process is proceeding in a normal way, without any problems", he said, adding that for now they cannot talk about the numbers already obtained because it is an unofficial process.

"This means that all those people who appear in the Identity Card database, who are over 18 years old, were transferred to the MAT older citizens database and, from the start, these are the people who are part of the global or the universe of voters, which can be sent to the national electoral commission", he explained.

Speaking to Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA), the minister also made it known that "in global terms" the country could "have approximately 11 to 12 million voting citizens for the 2022 general elections".

He also warned that the citizen card does not serve to vote: "The citizen card does not serve to vote, the citizen card only serves to specify the place where people live and this document at the outset serves to progressively eliminate the residence certificate (...)".

Cited by RNA, the official explained that the Government's forecast, in partnership with the national electoral commission, "is to discontinue the voter card". That is, "until 2027, the forecast is to stop issuing the voter card because from the start we will have national coverage of the Identity Card, then this card will be discontinued and people will exercise their right to vote with the Identity Card", he added.

He acknowledged, however, that there are obstacles in this process, but assured that the outlook will be improved with the prospect of opening branches on Saturdays.

"Because we are observing some floods, not in all the branches, in some specific ones, we are going to place the detached posts of our staff who will be standing next to them to update the register more quickly and then send the data to the printer for those who have to have the citizen card and we also plan to open the counters on Saturdays from 8:00 am or 9:00 am until 12:00 pm or 1:00 pm to make it easier for people to have access to the counter", he explained, quoted by RNA.
