João Lourenço salutes Marcelo for his re-election and calls for continuing "friendship path"

The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, congratulated Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa on Monday for his re-election as President of the Republic, stressing that Angola and Portugal will continue the path of strengthening friendship and cooperation.

"I believe that during Your Excellency's mandate, which is now starting, Angola and Portugal will continue to follow the path of strengthening friendship and cooperation in all areas that will allow our two countries to achieve common development goals", writes João Lourenço, in the message released by his press office.

The head of state also stresses that he has the support of Marcelo to continue "reciprocal actions in the field of combating covid-19" and wishes the President "the greatest successes in the performance of his noble mission".

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was on Sunday re-elected President of the Republic, with more than 60 percent of the votes.

For the tenth election of the President of the Republic, since the establishment of Portuguese democracy on April 25, 1974, 10,865,010 voters were registered, 1,208,536 more than in the previous suffrage, in 2016.

There were seven candidates for the Palace of Belém: in addition to the current President and re-candidate, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, supported by PSD and CDS-PP, Marisa Matias (supported by Bloco de Esquerda), Tiago Mayan Gonçalves (Liberal Initiative), André Ventura ( Enough), Vitorino Silva, better known as 'Tino de Rans', João Ferreira (PCP and PEV) and former PS ME member Ana Gomes (PAN and Livre).
