Covid-19: Africa with 722 more deaths and 22,208 cases in the last 24 hours

Africa has registered in the last 24 hours more 722 deaths by covid-19, for a total of 79,633, and 22,208 new cases of infection, according to the latest official data of the pandemic in the continent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of infected is 3,284,451 and that of recovered in the 55 member states of the organization in the last 24 hours was 29,018, for a total of 2,705,914 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, registering 1,542,022 infected and this Tuesday the 40,000 dead (40,656). South Africa alone, the country most affected by the covid-19 in the continent, registers 1,346,936 cases and 37,449 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 1,029,380 infected and 27,310 dead. East Africa accounts for 344,465 infections and 6435 deaths, while West Africa has 286,151 infections and 3682 deaths. In Central Africa 82,433 cases and 1550 deaths are counted.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths, after South Africa, has 8638 deaths and 157,275 infected, followed by Morocco with 7977 deaths and 460,144 infected.

Among the six countries most affected are also Tunisia, with 5750 deaths and 181,885 infected, Algeria, with 2840 deaths and 104,092 cases, Ethiopia, with 2033 deaths and 131,546 infections, and Kenya, with 1734 deaths and 99,227 infected.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola registered 439 deaths and 18,926 cases of infection, followed by Mozambique (249 deaths and 27,446 cases), Cape Verde (120 deaths and 13,046 cases), Equatorial Guinea (86 deaths and 5365 cases), Guinea-Bissau (45 deaths and 2478 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 deaths and 1142 cases of infection).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 2,031,048 deaths from more than 94.9 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report by the French news agency AFP.

Covid-19 is a respiratory disease caused by a new coronavirus (virus type) detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
