Covid-19: Africa with 598 more deaths and 27,045 cases in the last 24 hours

Africa has registered in the last 24 hours another 598 deaths by covid-19, reaching a total of 78,911, and 27,045 new cases of infection, according to the latest official pandemic data on the continent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the number of infected is 3,262,243 and that of recovered in the 55 member states of the organization in the last 24 hours was 27,376, for a total of 2,676,896 since the beginning of the pandemic.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,527,673 infected and 39,840 deaths. South Africa alone, the most affected country by covid-19 in the continent, registers 1,337,926 cases and 37,105 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 1,025,152 infected and 27,124 dead. East Africa accounts for 343,603 infections and 6421 deaths, while West Africa has 283,687 infections and 3641 deaths. In Central Africa 82,128 cases and 1545 deaths are counted.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths, after South Africa, registers 8583 deaths and 156,397 infected, followed by Morocco, with 7942 deaths and 459,671 infected.

Among the six countries most affected are also Tunisia, with 5692 deaths and 180,090 infected, Algeria, with 2836 deaths and 103,833 cases, Ethiopia, with 2030 deaths and 131,195 infections, and Kenya, with 1731 deaths and 99,162 infected.

In Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola registered 436 deaths and 18,875 cases of infection, followed by Mozambique (234 deaths and 25,862 cases), Cape Verde (119 deaths and 12,993 cases), Equatorial Guinea (86 deaths and 5365 cases), Guinea-Bissau (45 deaths and 2478 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 deaths and 1142 cases of infection).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 2,022,740 deaths from more than 94.4 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a review by the French agency AFP.
