Covid-19: Africa with another 1108 dead and 35,475 cases in the last 24 hours

Africa has registered 1108 deaths due to covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 69,863, and 35,475 new cases, one of the highest figures since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the most recent data from the continent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (Africa CDC), the total number of cases is 2,914,668 and there are now 2,395,289 recovered, plus 18,584 in the last 24 hours.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region with 1,292,193 and 33,614 deaths.

In this region, South Africa, the most affected country by covid-19 in the continent, accounts for a total of 1,149,591 infections and 31,368 deaths, accounting for more than half of the deaths and cases recorded throughout Africa in the last 24 hours.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 964,967 cases of infection and 25,305 deaths.

East Africa registers 329,046 infections and 6097 deaths, West Africa 255,054 infections and 3352 deaths, while Central Africa registers 76,678 cases and 1494 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths, after South Africa, has 7957 deaths and 145,590 infected, followed by Morocco with 7618 deaths and 447,081 infected.

Among the six countries most affected are also Tunisia, which passed this Thursday the five thousand dead (5004) and has 149,881 infected, Algeria, with 2786 deaths and 101,120 cases, Ethiopia, with 1965 deaths and 126,786 infections, and Kenya, with 1694 deaths and 97,398 infected.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Angola registered 413 deaths and 17,864 cases, followed by Mozambique (172 deaths and 19,667 cases), Cape Verde (113 deaths and 12,052 cases), Equatorial Guinea (86 deaths and 5286 cases), Guinea-Bissau (45 deaths and 2455 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (17 deaths and 1025 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa emerged in Egypt on February 14, and Nigeria was the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to register cases of infection on February 28.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 1,884,187 deaths from more than 87.1 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a balance sheet made by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected at the end of December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
