Dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima (in portuguese: Nossa Senhora de Fátima), Benguela Cathedral was built as a result of a promise made in 1947 after the figure of Our Lady of Fatima walked the streets of Benguela. The promise was made by the Governor, Commander Zanati, and by D. Manuel Junqueira.
The promise took a long time to be fulfill: Twenty years after, in 1967, the cathedral began to rise. Eight years later, the work of the cathedral was half finished. However, the construction stopped and the cathedral remained that way for 40 years.
However, the impasse in the work was not a reason for the cathedral to come into operation: during the time that the cathedral was unfinished, it served as a religious temple. The work was completed in 2006.
Nowadays, Benguela Cathedral is a very important place for the whole country.
