Angolan Football Federation suspends 1.º de Maio for three years from Girabola

The Angolan Football Federation (FAF) confirmed this Tuesday the disqualification and suspension, for three years, of the 1.º de Maio of Benguela of the national football championship, for a second lack of attendance in the race.

According to José Carlos Miguel, president of the judicial council of the FAF, which dismissed the appeal that the "proletarians" of Benguela filed in December 2019, the team must also pay a fine of three million kwanzas.

In statements to the press, the sports leader recalled that the 1.º de Maio, Girabola's last qualified with eight points, missed the match of the 15th and final round of the championship, after having already missed the challenge of the inaugural round.

"And, these two failures, in light of the FAF regulation, give the right to demotion", justified the decision.

The challenge between Santa Rita de Cássia and the 1.º de Maio of Benguela, scheduled for 22nd of December, for the 15th round, was not carried out by protest of the "Benguelenses" players, who claimed the payment of salaries in arrears and abandoned the concentration of the team in Luanda, as reported Lusa.

The football championship, which returns at the weekend, after a break from the holiday season, to dispute the second round, is led by Petro de Luanda, runner-up, with 38 points, followed by the 1.º de Agosto, four-time Angolan champion in title, with one point less.

The Benguela team, who beat Girabola twice, reached the Round of 16 of the Angolan Cup on Sunday by eliminating the Huambo Railway.
