Luanda Leaks case risks dollar leak and kwanza collapse, considers IHS Markit

The director of the African department of the consultant IHS Markit told Lusa this Thursday that the 'Luanda Leaks' investigation could trigger "an increase in demand for euros and dollars to be transferred out of Angola".

:

"The revelations could lead to an increase in demand for euros and dollars to be transferred out of Angola, as businessmen are worried about the consequences of the inspection of entities linked to Isabel dos Santos," said Bryan Plamondon.

Asked by Lusa about the implications of this case for the country's economy as a whole, the analyst replied that the fear of the assets linked to Isabel dos Santos "being confiscated or disappearing" could precipitate the exchange of kwanzas for currencies that could be used outside the country.

"This will put pressure on the parallel market rate and ultimately on the official exchange rate," added IHS Markit analist, who forecasts a 24 percent price increase and an interest rate of 16.25 percent this year.

On whether economic growth can be affected, Bryan Plamondon replied no, given that the growth projection for this year points to 1 per cent.

"We are not planning to make significant changes to our economic forecasts for Angola, as our outlook is already quite conservative and below the analysts' consensus," he explained.

Bryan Plamondon's statements to Lusa follow the corruption scandal that is affecting the country's political life, with the daughter of former President and businesswoman Isabel dos Santos being indicted and the Attorney General's Office (PGR) admitting to issuing an international arrest warrant.
