Central bank follows "with great attention" Isabel dos Santos case

The vice-governor of the National Bank of Angola (BNA) said this Thursday in Luanda that the Angolan central bank is following "with great attention" all the developments around the case involving businesswoman Isabel dos Santos.

Rui Miguêns mentioned, in statements to the press, that at this time the BNA is concerned to ensure compliance with the seizure order by the Provincial Court of Luanda of the bank accounts and actions of Isabel dos Santos, her husband, Sindika Dokolo, and her manager, Mário Leite da Silva.

"This has been our focus, but naturally the BNA, with its responsibilities for the stability of the national financial and banking system in particular, follows very closely all developments around the case," he said.

Urged to comment on the announcement of the resignation of Mário Leite da Silva from the post of chairman of the board of directors of Bando de Fomento Angola, the vice-governor of the BNA preferred not to issue any opinion.

Isabel dos Santos, businesswoman and daughter of the former President, José Eduardo dos Santos, was set up as a defendant, as well as Sarju Raikundalia, former financial manager of the oil company Sonangol, Mário Leite Silva, manager of Isabel dos Santos, Paula Oliveira, friend of the businesswoman and administrator of NOS, and Nuno Ribeiro da Cunha, manager of the businesswoman's EuroBIC account, who was found dead on Wednesday.

According to the Attorney General's Office, the group was set up as part of an investigation process opened following a complaint by the former chairman of Sonangol's board of directors, Carlos Saturnino.

A ruling by the Luanda Provincial Court, released at the end of December 2019, ordered the preventive seizure of private assets and accounts of Isabel dos Santos, Sindika Dokolo and Mário Leite da Silva.

An International Investigative Journalism Consortium (ICIJ) revealed last Sunday over 715,000 documents, under the name of 'Luanda Leaks', detailing financial schemes of Isabel dos Santos and her husband, Sindika Dokolo, which are said to have allowed the withdrawal of money from the Angolan public treasury, using tax havens.
