The PR states in a statement that the choice was made because of the "need to adapt the composition of the Council of the Republic, taking into account the changes in the presidency" of UNITA.
Adalberto Júnior is now a member of the Council of the Republic - composed of the Vice President of the Republic, the President of the Constitutional Court, the President of the National Assembly, the Attorney General of the Republic and leaders of the political parties sitting in parliament.
Adalberto da Costa Júnior assumed the presidency of UNITA on 15 November 2019.
The 2010 Constitution of the Republic establishes that the Council of the Republic is a "collegial body of advisory nature to the Head of State" and that its members "enjoy the immunities granted to members of the National Assembly".
