MPLA deputy says country wealth should be shared by all Angolans

The MPLA vice president defended that the country's wealth should be shared by all Angolans, so her party proposed to fight corruption.

Luísa Damião commented on the revelations of the journalistic investigation known as ‘Luanda Leaks’ that brought to public alleged financial schemes involving the Angolan businesswoman Isabel dos Santos.

The leader of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) valued the investigative role of journalists, which made it possible to arrive at the revelations. "This is a testament to the role that journalists have in society, a very interventional role, and I think it is a call to attention for our Angolan journalists to also be guided by investigative journalism", said Luísa Damião.

Regarding the 'Luanda Leaks' revelations, the MPLA vice president said that "the judiciary will act and is doing its part".

According to Luísa Damião, the MPLA proposed to fight corruption, nepotism and impunity because it “erodes the economic and social fabric, it harms the lives of all Angolans”. "We have an obligation to offer new generations a better country, all the evils we must combat", said the MPLA leader.

Luísa Damião appealed to society to engage in the campaign to moralize society, in order to combat bad practices and be able to “walk towards a new Angola”. "An increasingly prosperous, more developed, more inclusive and more modern Angola, because that is what Angolans deserve", he stressed.

And he stressed: "We think that the wealth that our country has should be shared by all Angolans in order to improve, in fact, the living conditions of Angolans".

Asked to comment on alleged internal differences in the fight against corruption, Luísa Damião assured that “the party is increasingly united, more cohesive”.

"We are working towards fulfilling our party's program and our militants are willing to help and carry on this banner of corruption, because it is a program that all MPLA activists have approved", he said.

The MPLA MP also stressed that MPLA activists are not all corrupt. "There may be some, but the MPLA has the advantage of being the party that proposed to fight corruption (...) because it is aware that this is an evil to fight", he stressed.

According to the MPLA vice-president, this anti-corruption program "has been going on for some time", and what is being done "is just materializing a program that was approved by MPLA militants themselves".

“Therefore, this division should not exist, because the program was approved by the militants of our party”, sustained Luísa Damião, adding that they must be “united around this program, because the MPLA is a party that has increased responsibilities, because it is the party that governs Angola”.
