Government applauds first post-independence law on conservation areas

On Friday, the government applaud the discussion in parliament of the Environmental Conservation Areas Law, the "first legal instrument of the sector elaborated after independence", considering that the law "is inclusive" and will "direct conflicts that persist" in these areas.

"One of the importance of this legal instrument is the basis for the classification of conservation areas. We had a very tight classification limit and this law opens the focus that will solve many conflicts that we have in the conservation areas, between conservation and other economic activities", said the Secretary of State for the Environment, Joaquim Manuel.

According to the governor, who was speaking in parliament during the discussion of the law, which will be discussed and voted on in the plenary meeting scheduled for 23 January, the legal instrument "is very important" because there are "several legal instruments that wait for this law".

Among the merits of the Law on Environmental Conservation Areas, observed Joaquim Manuel, is also the inclusion of local communities, who live near and inside the conservation areas, "which will be able to be part of the conservation of eco-tourism management".

"And even the management of flora and fauna in and around the conservation areas will be of great value to the executive and to the communities that live near and inside these conservation areas," he said.

Angola has established 11 national parks, one regional park and four conservation areas and, according to its Conservation Area Expansion Plan, "around 15 new areas are already catalogued for this purpose.
