Four thousand athletes run in the São Silvestre race to mark 50 years of independence

The 68th edition of the São Silvestre de Luanda race has, to date, a total of 4000 registered athletes. The sporting event, which takes place every year, is scheduled for the last day of 2024 and is part of the celebrations of the country's 50th anniversary.

"To date, this edition has 4000 registered athletes and will be held as part of the festivities of the 50th anniversary of National Independence", informed the government of the province of Luanda (GPL), in a statement to which VerAngola had access.

According to the provincial government, last Monday, took place the meeting of the provincial technical committee to support the 68th edition of the aforementioned race, which takes place "annually on December 31st".

The aforementioned meeting served to evaluate "the technical conditions of insurance, vital assistance, traffic and mobility, as well as basic sanitation before and after the race", and was chaired by the vice-governors for the Political and Social Sector, Manuel António Gonçalves, and Technical Services and Infrastructure, Calunga Francisco Zage Quissanga, as well as the Secretary of State for Sports, Paulo Madeira.

In another statement, to which VerAngola had access, GPL informs that the race will generate some restrictions on traffic in the capital.

"The Provincial Government of Luanda informs the population and drivers that, due to the holding of the 68th edition of the traditional pedestrian race 'São Silvestre Luanda', on December 31, 2024 (Tuesday), there will be significant changes in traffic in various roads in the city".

Therefore, the roads that will be closed are: Largo da Mutamba, Avenida Amílcar Cabral, Avenida Revolução de Outubro, Avenida Ho-Chi Minh, Alameda Manuel Van-Dúnem, Largo do Kinaxixi, Rua da Missão, Avenida 4 de Fevereiro, Largo do Baleizão and Rua Francisco das Necessidades.

Parking will be prohibited from 06:00am, while car circulation will be prohibited from 3pm.

"Residents and users of the aforementioned roads must remove their vehicles before the restrictions begin, under penalty of compulsory removal by the administration of the municipality of Luanda", advise the GPL, which, "to guarantee the fluidity of the race and the safety of participants", calls for "the collaboration of all citizens, respecting the signs and instructions of traffic police officers who will be present in the affected areas".

The race will take place over a 10 kilometer route, starting at Largo da Mutamba and finishing at Estádios dos Coqueiros.
