Magistrate says sexual crimes against minors are still tolerated by families

Sexual violence against minors in Angola continues to be “tolerated” by many families, especially outside the provincial capitals, said the spokesperson for the Superior Council of the Judiciary.

Correia Bartolomeu was speaking to the press on the sidelines of the Plenary of the Superior Council of the Judiciary, which analyzed the Reports on Processes of Sexual Violence against Minors, the result of inspection activities in the district courts of Cabinda, Buco Zau, Malanje, Cuanza Norte, Cuango, Chitato, Sumbe, Amboim, Cela, Huambo, Cáala and Bailundo.

Correia Bartolomeu stressed that the number of cases judged are significant, citing as an example the results of the Luanda Court of Appeal, which from 2022 to 2023 received appeals from 56 cases, most of them already decided.

The spokesperson for the Superior Council of the Judiciary said that the teams found that the host districts have the highest rate of criminal cases involving violence against minors.

“Outside the provincial capitals, the processes are small, we found only two to three cases, because, according to information obtained, the victims do not always participate in these acts”, said Correia Bartolomeu, highlighting that the families “tolerate” these cases.

According to Correia Bartolomeu, this meeting aimed to assess the degree of justice in cases of violence against minors, following the deployment, in the months of September and November, of several council inspection teams to all districts of the country.

The official highlighted that the results obtained are positive, despite reports of “very slow processing of these processes”.

“The results obtained across the country are quite satisfactory for the superior council, in that the majority of cases submitted, which involve sexual violence against minors, around 90 percent, were judged,” he said.

According to Correia Bartolomeu, the cases still awaiting judgment are within the legal deadlines for their processing.
