João Lourenço, in a message sent to his North American counterpart, Joe Biden, says that it is with a feeling of regret that he learned of Jimmy Carter's physical death.

"In this hour of mourning for the American people, I wish to salute the trajectory of this great figure who spanned an entire century, during which he was able to experience, observe and play an active and active role in the events that have indelibly marked the history of humanity in recent hundred years", wrote João Lourenço.

For the head of state, Carter achieved a political dimension that transcended his mandate as the 39th president of the USA, considering that the world will remember, "without a doubt", his influence and negotiating capacity in resolving conflicts in the complex context of the cold war.

Former President Jimmy Carter leaves the USA a precious institutional legacy that will certainly continue his life's work, which was to defend and promote democratic principles that have always constituted the compass of his actions, as a citizen and politician, said João Lourenço.

The former president of the United States, recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, died on Sunday at his home in Plains, in the US state of Georgia, at the age of 100.
