The bad weather caused havoc in several neighborhoods in South Kivu, causing landslides, the collapse of buildings and the overflow of a river.

A member of the provincial hospital told the France-Presse news agency (AFP) that they had "received 15 bodies" from various regions of Bukavu.

However, the spokesperson for the Bukavu City Council, Joseph Mugisho Zihalirwa, highlighted that at least "19 people died and five were injured" in the Kadutu commune, in Bukavu, including 11 members of the same family "dragged by the waters of the Kawa River ".

In the commune of Ibanda, also in Bukavu, a wall of a house "fell on a church (...) killing five faithful in the middle of prayer", according to Pastor Albert Migabo Nyagaza, who added that three other people had been dragged away by the waters.

According to the national water company of DRCongo, which borders Angola, the rain damaged a pipeline, depriving a large part of the city of water.

On Tuesday it was announced that a landslide, caused by heavy rains in an area of eastern DRCongo, last Sunday, caused the deaths of at least 22 people.

The tragedy occurred in the municipalities of Bitanga, Bigombe and Mazozo, located in the territory of Mwenga, in the province of South Kivu.
