UNITA condemns violence and urges Guinea-Bissau institutions to dialogue

UNITA condemned, this Wednesday, the violence and “any attempt to disturb order” in Guinea-Bissau, urging Guinean institutions to dialogue to resume normal functioning of the institutions.

In a statement from the Executive Secretariat of the Permanent Committee of the Political Commission, UNITA highlights that it has closely monitored the evolution of the political situation in Guinea-Bissau, following the alleged attempted coup d'état that occurred on December 1st, and defends dialogue as the way more effective conflict resolution.

It therefore urges the relevant Guinean institutions "to do everything to resume the normal functioning of the institutions".

On the same note, UNITA (National Union for the Total Independence of Angola) "stands in solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and condemns, in the most vehement way, violence and any attempt to disturb the order and foundations of a Democratic state".

The Guinean President, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, dissolved parliament on the 4th, citing a serious institutional crisis in the country as a result of exchanges of fire between members of the Armed Forces, on the 1st, which the head of state considered to be a an attempted coup d'état.

This Wednesday, the Guinean police prevented some deputies from accessing the parliament headquarters in Bissau, using tear gas grenades thrown into the air to disperse people in the vicinity of the building.

The leader of parliament, Domingos Simões Pereira, president of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) which leads the Inclusive Alliance Platform (PAI – Terra Ranka) which won the last legislative elections with an absolute majority, had called for this Parliamentary work resumes on Wednesday.

In the statement, UNITA called on African states, in general, and the African Union in particular, to pay more attention and invest more in consolidating democracy on the continent "as a fundamental factor of peace and stability".
