Detonation of unexploded explosive device kills a child and injures four

The explosion of an unexploded device caused the death of a child and the injury of four others, in Huambo province, Angolan public radio reported this Thursday.

In the incident, which took place in the Santo António neighborhood, a 2-year-old child died, while the rest were taken to the Huambo General Hospital.

A witness, the aunt of one of the victims, said that the children collected some irons for sale in a trash can.

"There is a place where irons are weighed and the children look for iron and go there to weigh it", explained Anabela Conceição, adding that the minors started to hammer the object, but due to the difficulty they found they decided to burn it, causing the explosion.

In turn, the surgeon at the emergency room at the Huambo General Hospital, Tomás Jovita, said that three of the four injured had already been discharged, with a 3-year-old child still under medical care.

"Of the four children, three of them had minor injuries, so they were taken care of, bandaged, they were under observation for six hours and were discharged yesterday [Wednesday]. The 3-year-old is in hospitalized in our health services for presenting a diagnosis of blunt abdominal trauma, it depends a lot on the evolution in the next 48 hours before discharge", he stressed.
