Angolan Academy of Sciences wants to "recognize and reward scientific excellence

The Angolan Academy of Sciences (AAC), an institution of civil society, proclaimed this Friday, proposes to "recognize and reward scientific excellence" and issue scientific opinions to support the Executive in public policy making.

The organ was proclaimed this Friday, in Luanda, in a solemn ceremony attended by the vice-president, Bornito Baltazar de Sousa.

In the presentation of this private association, constituted on November 8, 2019, the coordinator of the installation committee, Emanuel Catumbela, assured that the body brings together different valences for "valuation of scientific research" in the country.

According to him, the AAC, whose statute was published in Diário da República on January 21, 2020, aims to "promote, recognize and reward scientific excellence and promote and disseminate the advancement of science" in Angola.

"The Academy will reward the excellence of the researcher from an individual point of view, but also collective from the perspective of the quality of the work that is developed," he said.

The AAC also aims to promote public awareness of the value of science in sustainable development, the dissemination of scientific knowledge, as well as provide scientific advice to the executive on the development of public policies and other issues.

Promoting scientific studies relevant to society and providing scientific advisory services to society are also included in the objectives of the Angolan Academy of Sciences, according to the academic.

Emanuel Catumbela recalled that the AAC, a non-profit civil society organization of a scientific nature, is part of the National Development Plan.

On the other hand, Representative Evelize da Cruz Fresta, who represented the committee of Health, Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology of the parliament, considered on the occasion that the AAC will "promote scientific research throughout the country.

The Minister of Higher Education welcomed the proclamation of the AAC stating that its constitution is the achievement of one of the objectives of the program to improve the quality of higher education and development of scientific and technological research.

"Since the social purpose of the AAC is to promote scientific excellence, public awareness of the importance of science, the AAC is an important partner of the executive to promote scientific culture," said Maria do Rosário Sambo.

The executive director of the Banco Tecnológico das Nações, Jeshua Setipa, who participated in the meeting by videoconference, wished for the growth of the AAC and guaranteed to support "this important instrument for the development of Angola.

The Angolan Academy of Sciences, created under the Law of Private Associations, has founding members, staff, affiliates, emeritus and fees.
