WHO: strengthening primary health care is "critical to ensuring access to health for all

The World Health Organization (WHO), alluding to Universal Health Coverage Day, which is celebrated this Saturday, December 12, considered it essential to strengthen primary health care to ensure that all people have access to quality services that meet the needs of the population "without financial constraints".

For the WHO representative in Angola, Djamila Cabral, strengthening the health system, especially primary health care, "is a fundamental condition for ensuring access to health for all and for building a stronger and healthier society".

The responsible, cited in a communiqué sent to VerAngola, considered that covid-19 has become proof that it is "crucial to invest more in health and in the participation of all, for the creation of a resilient primary health care system that responds to the real needs of the population".

According to the joint WHO/World Bank report on Universal Health Coverage of 2019, in Angola "the average rate of Universal Health Coverage has increased from 36 percent to 40 percent, compared to the year 2017, in an assessment carried out in areas such as newborn and child health, infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, and capacity and access to health services".

Despite the achievements, it is necessary to continue working. "For the WHO, the ongoing initiatives aimed at strengthening the health system in Angola, in particular the increase in public financing for health and the prioritization of primary health care, will contribute to a safer and healthier future for all citizens," the note states, indicating that studies show that "ensuring access to health for all contributes to economic growth and employment, particularly for women".
