Angola and FAO sign strategic framework for transformation of the agrifood system

The Government of Angola and the representation of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the country officially signed the Country Programming Framework (CPF) for the period 2020-2023.

The CPF, prepared in accordance with the provisions of the partnership agreement between Angola and FAO and the current UN cooperation framework, aims to "increase food security and improve nutrition", "to boost an innovative training program led by young people and women and financial mechanisms "and" transforming the Angolan agrifood system into a resilient, competitive, diversified and inclusive system ".

For the implementation of this framework, it is estimated that the total resources needed are 57 million dollars.

The signing of the protocol took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Economy and Planning of Angola, in the capital, Luanda, and was attended by the holder of this portfolio, Sérgio Santos, the UN coordinator in Angola, Zahira Virani, and the FAO representative in country, Gherda Barreto.

According to a Government statement, the Minister of Economy and Planning acknowledged, at the ceremony, that the signing of this agreement demonstrates that the Government "deposits in agriculture, and above all in family farming, a great expectation" and that it considers FAO as "a partner -key".

In the same document, Zahira Virani highlighted the need to coordinate efforts at the multisectoral level inside and outside the UN to achieve zero hunger and promote economic growth through sustainable agriculture.

Gherda Barreto, from FAO, stressed that the challenge is "even more pronounced" due to the covid-19 pandemic, which puts "the progress made in food security and the livelihoods of those working in agriculture and food systems at risk".

"We believe that FAO is in an ideal position to contribute directly to the transformation of Angolan agrifood systems to be more resilient, sustainable and modern (...) that allow to increase national production, while increasing employment, with the inclusion of young people and women, and contribute to our four biggest aspirations: better production, better nutrition, better environment, and a better life ", added Gherda Barreto.

The projects underway in this framework are being financed with the support of the Government of Angola, the World Bank, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the African Development Bank, the European Union, the Global Environment Fund, and the UN as the CERF fund and the SDG fund.
