Food Reserve "debuts" with the arrival of a ship carrying 30,000 tons of sugar

The operationalization of the Strategic Food Reserve in the country is already underway, and a ship with 30,000 tonnes of sugar arrived in the country this Tuesday. The objective is to regulate the market, influencing the price reduction of basic food basket products.

Eduardo Machado, Angola's Customs Warehouse management coordinator, said that from now on, one or two ships a week will arrive in the country, transporting an average of 30 to 35 thousand tons of products that are part of the reserve.

"This Wednesday, another ship will dock at the Port of Lobito, in Benguela, with 25,000 tonnes of corn," said the official, quoted by Angop. The coordinator also explained that, as soon as there is pressure on the market, these products will be put into circulation – at a certain pace – in order to maintain stable supply and prevent price increases.

The Strategic Food Reserve was carried out last week, placing in this first phase up to 354,000 tons of food on the market, progressively increasing up to 520,000 tons, in a set of 11 products from the Basic Basket.

Among the products with immediate availability, sugar (50 kg bags), rice (25 kg bags) and chicken legs (10 kg boxes) stand out. In a next phase, products such as corn flour, wheat and cassava, cooking oil, millet, beans, rice, salt, chicken and dried fish should arrive.

In this way, the Reserve plans to acquire, store and distribute more than 500 thousand tons of food products, part of which is locally produced and transformed into industries that generate employment. A price reduction impact of up to five percent is expected for the final consumer.
