FLEC surprised by FAA chief's statements about “stable situation” in Cabinda

The Front for the Liberation of the State of Cabinda (FLEC-FLAC) expressed surprise at the statements made by a commander of the Angolan Armed Forces, who considers the political-military situation in the region to be “stable”, and requests the entry of independent international observers.

In a statement released this Saturday, the political-military direction of FLEC-FLAC interpreted that the stability referred to by the commander of the Cabinda Military Region of the FAA, Lieutenant General Tukikebi dos Santos "Chinês", "is stability in permanent war which has caused countless victims among the occupation forces, which Luanda does not recognize, belittling the suffering of the families of the Angolan soldiers killed in Cabinda".

On Thursday, the commander of the Cabinda Military Region (RMC) considered the political-military situation in the province, in the north of Angola, stable, where the FLEC movement has been demanding the territory's independence for years.

"The situation in the region is calm, and the Chief of the General Staff of the Angolan Armed Forces was able to see 'in situ' the life and normal functioning of the forces in the Cabinda Military Region", said Tukikebi dos Santos "Chinês".

On Saturday, FLEC-FAC said that the lieutenant general should allow independent international observers and journalists to "move freely throughout the territory of Cabinda, without the control and constraints imposed by the military or Angolan security, in order to verify the reality political-military in Cabinda".

"The stable political-military situation, fallaciously pronounced by Lieutenant General Tukikebi dos Santos "Chinês", is contradicted and witnessed by the excessive and continuous militarization of Cabinda by the Angolan occupation forces", accuses the organization.

The political leadership of FLEC-FAC accused Tukikebi dos Santos "Chinês" and the remaining Angolan officers in Cabinda of being "primarily traffickers under the cover of military personnel", and of being involved "in vast gold, copper, fuel and woods".

"The stability referred to by the Angolan lieutenant general "Chinês" is an argument to attract more customers to his illicit businesses", the note states.

The Angolan authorities have been dealing for several years with the claim of FLEC, an organization that demands the independence of the territory, from where much of Angola's oil comes, claiming that the enclave was a Portuguese protectorate – as established in the Treaty of Simulambuco, signed in 1885 – and not an integral part of Angolan territory.

The Government normally refuses to recognize the existence of dead soldiers resulting from guerrilla actions by independence activists, or any situation of instability in that northern province of Angola, always emphasizing the unity of the territory.
