Minister of Trade and Industry opens fertilizer factory in Benguela

The minister of Commerce and Industry, Victor Fernandes, inaugurated, this Monday, a fertilizer mixing plant in the Industrial Development Pole of Catumbela, in Benguela. Belonging to the Ferti-Angola company, the unit has a production capacity of 80 tons per day and has received an investment of over 5 million dollars.

On the occasion, the head of the Trade and Industry portfolio considered that the project will help to reduce imports, although it does not reach half (50 percent) of Angola's needs.

Cited by Angop, Victor Fernandes said that more factories of this style are needed, recognizing that patience is needed since this type of investment does not happen "overnight".

"We need many more factories of this kind, but we need to be patient because these investments are not made overnight", he said.

The minister also took the opportunity to congratulate the group, adding that this type of initiative responds to the Executive's call for a strong focus on agriculture for the rapid development of Angola.

Having relied on an investment of over five million dollars, the factory, according to António Bugalho, the company's director, can pack from 50 to 1000 kilos of fertilizers, depending on customer needs.

Also quoted by Angop, he also said that of the current employees of Ferti-Angola, 40 acquired their first job in the fertilizer unit.

He clarified that much of the raw material is obtained in European countries, such as Turkey and Greece, leaving out Russia and Ukraine because of the war.

"In addition to NPK12-24-12, we also produce other mixtures such as potassium chloride and urea, according to the specificity of each culture", he added.

António Assis, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, said that a first step had been taken, where improvements such as employment and reduction in production costs have already been noted, as the product is already packaged on national soil.

Cited by Angop, the minister said that it will also allow for a more adequate distribution, since it is necessary to get this product to the communes and villages where the peasants are.

"We cannot forget that a large part of the agricultural production we consume comes from its production, so it is necessary to make the fertilizer reach family farms, so that there is a better supply and consequently lower prices", he said, quoted by Angop.

It should be noted that Benguela already has a fertilizer factory, Angata - which is located in Lobito and whose inauguration took place about a year ago, on November 19, 2021 -, which makes the Ferti-Angola unit inaugurated this Monday at the second factory of its kind implemented in the province.
